Hops Around the World (1)
Kleistpark in Berlin

Hops in the middle of Berlin. Nearly.

This is the Kleistpark in Berlin. On a Wednesday evening in spring 2022. Around 350 years ago there was a hop garden here. At that time there was no monument in the middle and also no royal colonnades, from which a peripheral column protrudes into the picture on the left. And the whole thing was still in the small village of Schöneberg, far outside of what later became the Prussian capital. But what still existed at that time was an electoral brewery in Berlin, for which the hop garden provided the raw material. Around 1680 it was converted into a kitchen garden and soon afterwards into a stately botanical garden, unfortunately without hops by then. It was only much later that the green oasis was named after the German poet Heinrich von Kleist. Nothing was known about the former hop past for a long time.
